South Pasadena's own design guidelines say the Craftsman style "came to dominate" home building here from about 1900 to 1925. In the 1920s and 1930s, Mission and Spanish Colonial Revival, Tudor and Colonial Revival homes followed. A third of the city's homes were built before 1940, and nearly two thirds before 1960.
Craftsman homes have a lot of trim: exposed rafter tails, brackets, porch posts and window casings. That detail is what makes them beautiful, and it's also where old paint fails first. We take the time to prep and paint every piece, not just the flat walls.
South Pasadena has nine designated residential historic districts. The Cultural Heritage Commission reviews Certificate of Appropriateness applications for landmarks and homes in those districts. The city's application asks how old paint will be removed and how surfaces will be prepped, so the method matters as much as the color.
The city's published documents don't say clearly whether a color change alone needs approval. If your home is a landmark or in a district, call the Planning Division before you choose colors. We'll build the timeline around any review.
You get the scope and the price in writing before any work starts. Henry will walk you through the prep your home needs, and there are no hidden costs.

I had a fantastic experience with HR Painting and Design. Henry and his guys did an excellent job repairing my walls and giving everything a fresh coat of paint. The results were clean, smooth, and professional-looking. Communication was super easy—everyone was friendly, responsive, and respectful throughout the process. I was also really impressed by how quickly they got everything done without cutting corners. If you're looking for a reliable and skilled painting team, I’d definitely recommend them!

HR Painting did an excellent job painting my parents living room ceiling and wall. They were extremely fast in responding and scheduling a time to give an estimate. As soon as my dad agreed to use them for the job, they were available that same week to come back and do the work. The painter was respectful, taped up the area and completed the work in a timely manner. I would absolutely use this company again.
